About Sudoku

Sudoku is the puzzle equivalent of a long walk: no reflexes, no opponents, just a 9×9 grid quietly arguing with itself until every row, every column and each of the nine 3×3 boxes holds the digits 1 to 9 exactly once. This version generates every board on the fly and guarantees each one has exactly one solution — you will never sit down to a puzzle whose answer depends on a coin flip. Conflicts highlight the moment you type them, so a transcription slip is visible instantly instead of poisoning the grid twenty minutes later.

Three difficulties tune the starting information. Easy leaves 41 cells given, medium 33, and hard just 27 — and the harder boards do not merely hide more digits, they demand deeper deduction chains: naked and hidden pairs, locked candidates, box-line interactions. No board ever needs guessing; a logical route always exists, which turns every stuck moment into a re-reading exercise rather than a gamble. The generator digs cells out of a fully solved grid and verifies uniqueness before the puzzle ever reaches you, so the difficulty comes from real logic depth rather than from ambiguity.

The puzzle’s modern shape is younger than it feels: an American magazine printed the first version in the late 1970s, Japan refined and renamed it during the 1980s, and the worldwide wave followed in the 2000s once newspapers adopted it as a daily fixture. The discipline it teaches — eliminating candidates until only one candidate remains — is identical whether you play in a newspaper margin, on paper, or here.

Everything runs locally with no account and no interruptions: pick a difficulty, fill the grid by mouse or keyboard, and the timer records how long the argument took, with your best time per difficulty kept in this browser. The number pad sits beside the grid on touch devices, and because a conflicting digit only highlights rather than locks, experimenting inside the rules is free. Newcomers fail in familiar ways — scanning randomly instead of digit by digit, ignoring a box that is one placement from completion, and writing numbers they have not proven. Work the most constrained boxes first, let completed units pressure their neighbours, and the hard grid starts behaving like a long chain of free placements. A medium board takes most people ten to twenty minutes; the timer is there for when a coffee break quietly becomes a hobby.

How to Play Sudoku

  1. 1

Press Play and choose easy, medium or hard.

  2. 2

Select any empty cell and enter 1–9 by keyboard or the on-screen pad.

  3. 3

Each digit may appear only once per row, per column and per 3×3 box.

  4. 4

Conflicting entries are highlighted immediately — fix them before continuing.

  5. 5

Use the erase button (or 0 / Backspace) to clear a cell you no longer trust.

  6. 6

Complete the grid correctly to win; the timer compares against your best time for that difficulty.

Tips & Strategy

TIP 1

Scan for singles first: any cell whose row, column and box together eliminate eight digits is a free placement.

TIP 2

Hunt hidden singles — a digit with only one possible home inside a box — they crack more hard boards than any advanced technique.

TIP 3

Work box by box rather than cell by cell; completed boxes exert the strongest pressure on their neighbouring rows and columns.

TIP 4

On hard, track pairs: two cells in a unit sharing the same two candidates can be excluded from every other cell in that unit.

TIP 5

When stuck, stop adding and re-read: the last few placements usually contain the contradiction or the opening you missed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every puzzle have exactly one solution?

Yes. The generator verifies uniqueness before the board is shown, so you never have to choose between two valid-looking answers.

Do I need to guess on hard?

No. Hard boards hide more digits and need deeper techniques — pairs, locked candidates, box-line logic — but a complete logical path always exists.

How many digits are given?

Easy boards start with 41 given cells, medium with 33 and hard with 27 — the gap in starting information is where the difficulty actually lives.

Is the game free, and is my time saved?

Completely free with no registration, and your fastest solve per difficulty is stored in this browser, so each level is a race against yourself.
