About Connect Four

Connect Four rewards thinking in columns: on a 7×6 grid every disc falls to the lowest empty cell, so the board’s geometry shifts with every drop and the middle of the board becomes the most contested real estate in casual gaming. You play red against a yellow computer opponent across three strengths, each with its own running record. The easy level plays more than half its moves at random — a gentle sparring partner. Medium errs only occasionally, and hard runs a deep minimax search with alpha-beta pruning and never gifts a move at all.

The tactical vocabulary is richer than the rules suggest. Vertical threats stack on top of their own blockers, horizontal threats stretch across rows neither player fully controls, and diagonal threats hide until three discs are already down. Because every column drop changes everything above it, good play means building two threats at once — the classic double threat shares one winning cell — and cutting off the opponent’s diagonals before they mature. Row parity matters too: strong players count odd and even rows, because the threats one side can answer in time are decided by that arithmetic.

The physical game has been a household staple since the 1970s, and its reputation survived direct contact with mathematics: Connect Four is solved, and perfect play by the first player — beginning in the centre column — always wins. Humans do not play perfectly, which is exactly why the game stays fun; the solved result is a map of what to aspire to, not a spoiler for the afternoon.

Everything here runs in your browser with no download and no account, and a round restarts in one click. The scoreboard tracks your wins, losses and draws separately for each difficulty, so progress reads as a campaign rather than a streak, and switching strengths starts a fresh tally rather than mixing records — each level is its own honest fight. Newcomers lose for predictable reasons: dropping into columns that hand the AI the centre, chasing one line while a diagonal ripens elsewhere, and forgetting that every disc you place is also a platform your opponent can build on. Play the centre first, scan all seven columns before each drop, and the hard AI starts to feel less like a wall and more like a rival worth beating.

Tips & Strategy

TIP 1

Own the centre column early: more four-in-a-row windows pass through it than through any other file, and the hard AI is priced in accordingly.

TIP 2

Scan all seven columns for the opponent’s immediate win before planning your own — one forced block per round is the cost of doing business.

TIP 3

Build “seven” shapes — two diagonals sharing one cell — so a single drop creates two winning threats at once.

TIP 4

If you move first, stage threats on odd rows; if second, on even rows — parity decides which threats can actually be answered in time.

TIP 5

Avoid tidy, symmetric stacks: predictable shapes hand the hard AI exactly the structure its search rewards.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Connect Four really solved?

Yes — perfect play by the first player wins, starting from the centre column. The hard AI searches deeply but is not perfect, so disciplined play takes games off it.

Can I play against a friend?

Not in this build — it is you against the computer at three strengths. For a shared-screen duel, Tic Tac Toe’s two-player mode or a round of Paddle Duel covers it.

Does the game need an internet connection?

Once the page has loaded, the whole game runs on your device — nothing is sent anywhere while you play.

Is my record saved?

Yes — wins, losses and draws are stored per difficulty in this browser and shown alongside the board, so each strength becomes its own running score.
