About Block Drop

Block Drop is the falling-block stacking game the whole world knows by muscle memory: seven shapes, one narrow well, and lines that vanish the moment they complete. This build plays the genre with the modern competitive toolkit — a ghost outline shows where the current piece will land, a preview shows what comes next, and a hold slot lets you bench one piece per drop for the moment you actually need it. Hard drops slam the piece to the floor for two points a row, soft drops earn one, and clearing four lines at once with the long bar is still the score event every stacker lives for.

The pacing follows the classic escalation: each group of ten cleared lines steps the fall speed up a level, so the early well is generous and the late well is a firehose. Points scale with your level too, which means a sloppy four-line clear at level 8 outearns a careful one at level 2 — risk and reward sit on the same dial. The seven shapes are the genre’s complete vocabulary, and the skill they teach is spatial bookkeeping: every misplaced piece is a hole you will pay for ten lines from now.

The genre was created in 1984 in the Soviet Union and became one of the first games to travel the world through computers rather than arcades. This is an original implementation under its own name — the mechanics belong to the whole falling-block family, and everything about the feel here, from the ghost piece to the hold slot, is the standard competitive players settled on decades later.

Keyboard play is complete — move, rotate, soft and hard drop, hold with C, pause with P or Escape — and phones get a full on-screen pad with the same verbs. Pause is instant and resume is honest: the well does not move while you think, so a run fits cleanly into whatever gap the day offers. There is nothing to install and no account, and your best score is saved in this browser so the next run starts with a target on it. The classic failure is hard-dropping a piece that was one rotation away from perfect; the second is hoarding the hold slot for a perfect moment that never comes. Use it early, use it often, and above all keep the stack flat.

Tips & Strategy

TIP 1

Keep the stack flat and low; every bump doubles the difficulty of the next placement.

TIP 2

Save one side column for the I-piece — that is where four-line clears, and the level-scaled payouts behind them, come from.

TIP 3

The hold slot is a toolbox, not a museum: swap early on a bad fit instead of forcing the piece into the wrong gap.

TIP 4

Soft drop buys reading time for one point a row — cheap insurance when the next piece is ambiguous.

TIP 5

Trust the ghost, then verify: a hard drop on a misread ghost is the single most common way a good run dies.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Tetris?

It is an original implementation of the falling-block genre that Tetris made famous — our own name and code, with the modern mechanics (ghost piece, hold slot, next preview) the genre settled on.

Can I play with touch controls?

Yes. On phones and tablets an on-screen pad appears with move, rotate, soft drop and hard drop buttons.

Does the speed ever stop rising?

No. Every ten cleared lines steps the fall speed up another level — that escalation is the game’s entire arc.

Does dropping faster score more?

Yes: soft drop pays one point per row and hard drop two, on top of the line-clear points that scale with your level.
