About Gem Match

Gem Match is match-three with the volume turned down and the mathematics turned up: an 8×8 board of six gem types, swaps between direct neighbours, and clears that start at three. Every gem is a different shape — diamond, hexagon, star, circle, triangle, drop — drawn as crisp inline SVG with highlights, so the board stays readable even for colour-blind players who cannot lean on the six colours.

The scoring system is where the depth hides: a clear is worth ten points per gem times the square of your cascade combo. A plain three-match opens modestly, but a six-gem clear that triggers a chain of collapses can outscore ten ordinary moves, because every extra cascade link squares the multiplier again. Gravity drops new gems after every clear, and the resulting chains resolve themselves for free — the board plays solitaire with your plan and pays you for it.

Each level gives you 30 moves to reach a rising target, and the board is engineered to be fair: new layouts never start with ready-made matches, always contain at least one legal move, and if a board deadlocks mid-level the game quietly reshuffles the same gems into a playable position with a toast and a shuffle sound. Failed swaps cost nothing — the gems shake, swap back, and your move counter never notices. The animations explain the rules as they play: matched gems pop with a scale-out, replacements drop in with a fade, and an illegal swap visibly wiggles both gems before restoring them, so the board always shows why a move failed.

The common beginner mistake is spending moves on the first match the eye finds near the top, when the bottom half of the board is where gravity turns singles into chains. Play it as a thinking game: there is no timer, so every swap can be considered. It runs entirely in your browser with no ads popping over the board, your best score and furthest level are saved locally, and swaps work by tap-pair or by dragging a gem straight into its neighbour. The targets are easy to reason about as well: level one asks for 1000 points and every later level adds exactly 850, so you can usually tell whether your next cascade will finish the level before spending the move. That legibility — scores you can predict, failures you can see, moves that are never wasted silently — is what makes the game easy to start and genuinely hard to put down.

Tips & Strategy

TIP 1

Work from the bottom half: low clears drag whole columns down and often ignite free cascades above them.

TIP 2

A swap only costs a move when it matches, so testing a suspicious swap is always free information.

TIP 3

Chase the biggest cluster, not the closest one — points scale with the gem count and with the combo squared.

TIP 4

Keep one eye on the move counter: ten cautious three-matches usually lose to five planned cascade openers.

TIP 5

Set up the follow-up, not just the match: a swap that leaves two same gems stacked vertically is one clear away from a free chain.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do failed swaps cost a move?

No. If a swap produces no match the gems shake and swap back, and your move counter is untouched — experimenting is free.

What if there are no possible moves?

The game detects dead boards and reshuffles the existing gems into a position with at least one legal move — the board never stalls mid-level.

How exactly are cascades scored?

Each clear scores ten points per gem times the cascade counter squared, so the second collapse in a chain is worth four times the first and the third is worth nine.

What carries over between levels?

Your total score keeps accumulating as long as you clear levels; the target, the move budget and the level counter reset, and a run ends only when the moves run out.
