About Cadillacs and Dinosaurs

This is one of the few arcade games adapted from a comic rather than a movie: Xenozoic Tales, Mark Schultz’s series about a 26th century where civilization collapsed, the seas rose, and the dinosaurs came back with them. Capcom put that swamp-punk world onto CPS1 hardware in 1993 with the big, fluidly animated sprites the board was famous for, and opened the brawler to three players at once, each taking one of the comic’s leads — Jack Tenrec, Hannah Dundee or Mustapha Cairo. The three are distinct enough to matter, trading speed against power against reach, so the character select is a real decision rather than a costume change.

The plot is an eco-thriller told with fists. Black-market poachers are stripping the swamplands of dinosaurs for a corporate operation, and the trafficking has produced something worse downstream: mutated creatures that owe nothing to nature. So what punches you evolves as you go — first knife-and-pipe punks in leather, then paramilitary poachers, then mutants and boss dinosaurs that dwarf the screen. Behind it all is the operation’s scientist patron, Dr. Simon Fessenden, and the run is structured as a pursuit: chase the operation through swamps, cities and jungle outposts until someone finally lets you into the lab.

Two things set it apart from its Final Fight cousins. First, weapons are everywhere and they matter: pipes, machetes, rocks and actual firearms drop constantly, and a gun — a few devastating shots, then empty — changes a fight completely, so the smart play is to shoot whoever is shooting at you first. Second, the title is literal: a stretch of the game is fought from a moving Cadillac, punching poachers and motorcycles off the running board at highway speed. Underneath sits the house-style risk-reward: a character-specific special move that clears everything around you at the price of a sliver of your own health.

It never got the home-console fame of Capcom’s bigger brawlers, which is part of why it feels fresh now: no other major beat ’em up commits this hard to a setting, and “punch a poacher off a moving car while a triceratops watches” is a sentence only this game earns. Arcade operators kept the boards running for years on word of mouth alone. Here it plays free through the Internet Archive’s official arcade emulator — nothing to install, no sign-up, keyboard controls, and a first load of ten to forty seconds while the CPS1 board boots in your browser. Desktop with a keyboard is the right way in; on touch screens, take the Internet Archive link instead.

How to Play Cadillacs and Dinosaurs

  1. 1

Click the game area so the emulator catches your keys, press 5 to insert a coin, then 1 to start.

  2. 2

Choose Jack, Hannah or Mustapha — each has a different mix of speed, power and reach.

  3. 3

Walk right and clear the poacher gangs with attacks (Ctrl), jumps (Alt) and jump attacks; grabs and throws break tight crowds.

  4. 4

Grab whatever drops: pipes and machetes swing wide, and guns fire a few devastating, limited shots.

  5. 5

Save the special (attack and jump together) for when you are surrounded — it hits everything nearby and costs you a little health.

  6. 6

Fight through the swamps, cities and the poachers’ lab, take down the bosses and the operation behind them, and the swampland is safe.

Tips & Strategy

TIP 1

Guns decide fights: when a firearm drops, take it and spend it on the enemies carrying their own — every armed poacher you shoot first is one bullet you never eat.

TIP 2

Jump attacks are the safest opener into a crowd; walking into a pack mid-swing gets you grabbed from behind.

TIP 3

The special move is insurance, not strategy — the health it costs is the health the next boss needed.

TIP 4

Food heals, and it appears between waves: clear the screen, then eat, because a pickup dropped mid-brawl is a pickup you will never reach.

TIP 5

In the car sequence, stay on the attack button and aim your swings toward the road — anything knocked off the car is gone, anything left on it attacks your back.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who made Cadillacs and Dinosaurs?

Capcom released it to arcades in 1993 on CPS1 hardware, adapted from Xenozoic Tales, Mark Schultz’s comic about a dinosaur-filled 26th century.

Is it free to play?

Completely. There is no account, no download and no cost — the game plays through the Internet Archive’s official arcade emulator right on this page.

Why is the first load slow?

On first load the emulator has to stream the game data from archive.org and boot the arcade board — ten to forty seconds. After that your browser keeps the files and future loads are quicker.

Can I play it on a phone or tablet?

The arcade build is keyboard-first, so touch devices are a poor fit for the embedded player. Use the Internet Archive link on this page instead, and play it where there is a keyboard.
