About Alien Storm

Alien Storm runs on paranoia: the invasion has already happened, and the aliens are standing behind newsstands, sitting in diners and walking dogs right up until the moment they unfold into tentacles. Sega’s 1990 beat ’em up plays on System 18 hardware and comes from the same design lineage as Golden Axe — the fantasy skeleton shows through the science-fiction skin, right down to the three-hero roster and the screen-clearing emergency attack. You take one third of an alien-hunting trio: Garth, Karen, or Scooter, a robot. The city looks normal. That is the problem, and the game never lets you forget it for a whole screen.

What makes it special is how restless the level design is. Side-scrolling brawling is only the default: some stages throw you down corridors seen head-on, charging into the screen while a shooting gallery of aliens pours out — a slice of Space Harrier bolted onto a brawler. Others move the hunt indoors, where disguised aliens hide inside furniture and appliances and the game becomes a room-by-room search: smash the right cupboard and something screams. The constant is the reveal — enemies that looked human straighten into horrors mid-approach — and no other arcade brawler of its era played with disguise this way.

The trio fights differently: each hunter pairs close-range strikes with a personal firearm, and weapon pickups upgrade what the gun fires until the late stages feel more like light warfare than fisticuffs. The specials keep the Golden Axe inheritance — one screen-clearing trump card per character — and Scooter’s is the famous one: the robot simply detonates and reassembles itself from the debris, a gag that stays funny in a pinch. Each district ends with one of the invasion’s heavyweights, a lineup of grotesques that escalates toward whatever is actually running this invasion.

A Mega Drive port kept it alive at home, but the arcade original never matched the audience of its fantasy sibling — which is exactly why it plays fresh now. The body-snatcher premise gives every encounter a suspicious rhythm no dragon ever managed, and the constant genre-swapping keeps a run moving faster than its peers. It plays here free through the Internet Archive’s official arcade emulator: nothing to install, no account, keyboard controls, and a first boot of ten to forty seconds while the machine starts. Desktop with a keyboard is the way to play it; on phones and tablets, the Internet Archive link is the honest route.

How to Play Alien Storm

  1. 1

Click the game area first so it receives keyboard input, press 5 to insert a coin, then 1 to start.

  2. 2

Move right with the arrows; fight with attacks (Ctrl) and jumps (Alt), and grab weapon upgrades whenever they appear.

  3. 3

Watch for the reveal — apparently ordinary people and objects will unfold into aliens; hit them first.

  4. 4

In the corridor stages your hero charges into the screen: dodge the volleys and return fire through the shooting-gallery stretches.

  5. 5

Indoors, search the furniture — disguised aliens hide in it, and flushing them out is the only way forward.

  6. 6

Spend the special (Space) when surrounded, beat each district’s boss, and push on toward whatever runs the invasion.

Tips & Strategy

TIP 1

Trust no bystander: in this game the scenery is a costume, and the first hit on a fresh reveal is worth more than any combo on a known enemy.

TIP 2

Keep the gun upgraded whenever a pickup crosses your path — ranged pressure makes the disguised reveals trivial in a way fists never will.

TIP 3

Save the special for the surround moments the game scripts for you; spending it on three stragglers wastes a trump card.

TIP 4

In the into-the-screen corridors, move first and shoot second — standing still is the only way those volleys actually hit you.

TIP 5

Learn the reveal timing rather than tanking it: dodging the first lunge costs nothing, healing it costs health you wanted for the boss.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who made Alien Storm, and when?

Sega released it to arcades in 1990 on System 18 hardware, from the same design lineage as Golden Axe, and ported it to the Mega Drive soon after.

Is it free?

Yes — no account, nothing to install. The arcade original streams from the Internet Archive and plays through its official emulator on this page.

Why the wait on first load?

The emulator streams the game from archive.org and boots the arcade board first — ten to forty seconds is normal, and cached loads afterward are much faster.

Can I play on mobile?

The embed expects a keyboard, so phones and tablets will frustrate. Open the Internet Archive link from this page instead and save it for a machine with real keys.
