About Lights Out

Lights Out is the toggle puzzle that looks like luck and is actually algebra. Tap any light and it flips itself plus its four neighbours; the goal is a fully dark board. Because every tap toggles a fixed cross-shaped group, the order of your moves never matters — only the set of cells you tap an odd number of times decides the outcome, and that is exactly what makes the puzzle so satisfying to crack. Every flip answers with a sound pitched to whether the light turned on or off, so the board keeps talking to you while you think.

Three board sizes set the pace: 3×3 for a coffee-break deduction, 5×5 for the classic experience, and 7×7 for a genuine endgame of parity chasing. Every puzzle is generated by tapping backwards from a solved board, so a solution is mathematically guaranteed — you will never be handed an impossible deal, which is not true of all versions of this puzzle.

The game also tells you the truth about your play: PAR is the true minimum number of taps for this exact board, computed with linear algebra over a finite field when the puzzle is dealt, and finishing at or under par earns three stars — within two more earns two. That single number turns every solve into a conversation with the puzzle: not just whether you can turn the lights off, but whether you found the elegant way.

Unlimited undo means no wrong line of thinking is ever fatal, your best move count is stored per board size, and the whole game is playable from the keyboard with a visible cursor. The common trap is tapping in circles when the bottom rows resist — the fix is almost always higher up the board, not a barrage at the lights in front of you. Small kindnesses run through the interface: the move counter sits beside the par counter so the race is always on screen, and your chosen board size is remembered between visits. On phones the cells never shrink below a comfortable tap size — the board scrolls instead — so even the 7×7 stays playable on the smallest screens. Generosity with undo and honesty about par come from the same idea: the puzzle should be the only opponent you face. No ads, no accounts, nothing between you and the next deal.

Tips & Strategy

TIP 1

Play top-down: decide the top row, then chase every light downward — a tap in the row below is the only way to fix the light above it.

TIP 2

If the second row looks wrong after the chase, the mistake is almost always in the row above it, not the bottom.

TIP 3

Undo is a thinking tool: lay three taps, see the contradiction, rewind — it is cheaper than committing to a broken line.

TIP 4

Trust the method over inspiration — chasing lights downward solves every solvable board, including the 7×7.

TIP 5

On 5×5, some boards have several solutions; when the standard chase leaves a stubby pattern, try a different top-row choice instead of forcing the endgame.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is every puzzle guaranteed solvable?

Yes. Boards are generated by applying random taps to a fully dark board, which means reversing those taps — and therefore a solution — always exists.

What does PAR mean?

The minimum number of taps that solves this exact board, computed when the puzzle is generated. Matching it earns three stars; finishing within two more earns two.

Does the order of my taps matter?

No. Flipping is commutative — only the cells you tap an odd number of times decide the final board, which is why undo and re-planning work so well here.

Which size should I start with?

Easy (3×3) teaches the flip-and-chase method in a minute, Normal (5×5) is the classic, and Hard (7×7) is where the chase method becomes genuinely necessary rather than merely helpful.
