About Golden Axe II

Golden Axe II returned Sega’s fantasy brawler to arcades in 1992, released on the Mega Play board — a Sega arcade system built around Mega Drive technology, used to put console-caliber games on arcade floors. The trio is intact: Ax Battler the barbarian, Tyris Flare the amazon and Gilius Thunderhead the dwarf, fighting side by side through a side-scrolling world of sword, sorcery and very large enemies. The grammar is the series’ grammar. Hack through waves of soldiers and skeletons, grab the magic potions scattered by fleeing gnomes, and spend them on each hero’s signature screen-clearing magic — earth for Ax, flame for Tyris, thunder for Gilius.

The story gives the fighting a target: Dark Guld and his forces have stolen the Golden Axe itself, and the run follows the heroes through forests, villages and strongholds to take it back. Beneath the surface the combat has real layers — attacks chain, jump attacks clear space, point-blank fights become throws, and the beasts enemy soldiers ride can be stolen and turned against their own side, which changes a crowded screen immediately. Potions decide the ceiling of every run. Banked magic is the fastest way through a boss, and the game keeps offering the same choice: win the safe way with steel, or spend the spell and end the argument.

What the Mega Play edition preserves is the feel that made the series famous: heavy, physical combat where every hit lands with weight, colorful fantasy stages, and bosses built around patterns you can learn. Difficulty is honest coin-op economics — waves arrive in numbers, enemies flinch realistically, and the continue screen is never more than one mistake away. It is a short machine by modern standards and makes no apology for it. This is a tight arcade fantasy brawler you can learn in one credit and keep chasing for weeks.

One honest note for searchers: the original Golden Axe — the 1989 game that started all of this — currently has no legal online version, because it has been pulled from the Internet Archive’s playable collection. If you came here hunting a way to play Golden Axe online, that first game simply is not legally streamable right now, and this page will not pretend otherwise with a dead link. What is here is the sequel, playable free through the Internet Archive’s official emulator: nothing to install, no account, keyboard controls, and a first load of ten to forty seconds while the board boots. Desktop and keyboard recommended; on touch screens, take the Internet Archive link.

How to Play Golden Axe II

  1. 1

Click the game area first so it receives keyboard input, press 5 to insert a coin, then 1 to start the quest.

  2. 2

Pick Ax Battler, Tyris Flare or Gilius Thunderhead and clear the stages with attack (Ctrl) and jump (Alt).

  3. 3

Jump toward a ridden beast to steal it — a stolen mount plows through the crowds its rider used to protect.

  4. 4

Collect every potion the fleeing gnomes drop; potions are the fuel for your hero’s magic.

  5. 5

Unleash magic with Ctrl + Alt together when a boss or a hopeless crowd appears — earth, flame or thunder, depending on your hero.

  6. 6

Hunt Dark Guld through his strongholds and take the Golden Axe back.

Tips & Strategy

TIP 1

Bank potions into boss fights: a full magic bar deletes more boss health than any amount of sword work.

TIP 2

Jump attacks are the safest opener into a wave — standing trades with armed soldiers are coin-flips you do not need.

TIP 3

At point-blank range your attack becomes a throw, and a throw into a crowd clears more space than it should.

TIP 4

Mounts win screens, not fights — use them to break a hard wave, then get off before something takes the beast from under you.

TIP 5

Kill the ranged enemies first in every mixed group; soldiers are annoying, but the casters are expensive.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the original Golden Axe playable online?

Not legally anywhere right now — the 1989 original has been removed from the Internet Archive’s playable collection, so this site does not host or link it. The sequels on this site are the honest way to play the series online.

Which game is this, exactly?

The 1992 arcade edition of Golden Axe II, released by Sega on the Mega Play board — a Mega Drive-derived arcade system. The heroes, combat and magic are the sequel’s, tuned for the arcade.

Is it free to play here?

Yes — nothing to install, no account, no cost. The game streams from the Internet Archive and runs in its official arcade emulator; the first load takes ten to forty seconds while the board boots.

Can I play it on a phone or tablet?

The brawler is keyboard-first, so touch screens struggle with the embedded player. Take the Internet Archive link from this page instead and play where there are real keys.
