About Super Hang-On

Super Hang-On is Sega’s 1987 motorcycle racer and the sequel that took the Hang-On formula across the map — literally. The core of the original survives: a checkpoint race against the clock at absurd speeds. What is new is the scope — four continental courses, Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe, each with its own scenery, road character and length. And then there is the cabinet: a full-size, working motorcycle that you steer by leaning, with the throttle on the grip and the brakes under your feet. That machine turned a racing game into a physical performance, and people lined up to be seen on it.

The racing is pure arcade economy. Each course is a chain of stages separated by checkpoints, and the timer between them is set so tight that cruising is disqualification by another name — you earn time by finishing stages fast and keep the run alive by reaching the next checkpoint before the clock dies. Rival riders share the road, and they are obstacles more than opponents: clipping one at speed throws rider and bike across the tarmac, and every crash is time you will not get back. Cornering is the whole craft — braking into the turn, leaning through it, and getting back on the power as early as nerve allows.

The feature that earned this sequel its name is the turbo. Once the bike is already at top speed, a second control kicks in the boost, and the game changes character entirely: the scenery blurs, the engine note climbs, and every degree of lean matters twice as much. Boosting through a corner you have not memorized is how runs end; boosting down a straight you know by heart is how records fall. Deciding, corner by corner, which of those two situations you are actually in — that is the game.

Hang-On and its sequel defined arcade motorcycle racing the way Out Run defined arcade driving generally, and Super Hang-On traveled widely — console and computer versions carried it into homes throughout the late eighties. Here the coin-op runs free through the Internet Archive’s official emulator: nothing to install, no account, keyboard controls, and a first load of ten to forty seconds while the board boots. Without the lean machine, the arrow keys do the leaning, and the game plays better that way than you would expect. On touch devices, use the Internet Archive link instead.

How to Play Super Hang-On

  1. 1

Click the game area so it receives keyboard input, press 5 for a coin, then 1 to head to the course select.

  2. 2

Choose a continent — Africa, Asia, the Americas or Europe — and start your run.

  3. 3

Hold Up for full throttle and steer with Left and Right; the bike leans, so begin turns early and gently.

  4. 4

Brake (Down) before fast corners rather than in them, then get back on the power as the road straightens.

  5. 5

Pass rival riders with room to spare — contact at speed throws you off the bike and costs seconds you cannot replace.

  6. 6

Reach each checkpoint before the timer expires; once flat-out, press Ctrl for the turbo and manage it corner by corner to the finish.

Tips & Strategy

TIP 1

The timer, not the rivals, ends most runs — ride for the checkpoint first and for style never.

TIP 2

Turbo on straights you know; treat every corner as hostile until you have survived it once at full boost.

TIP 3

Rivals are movable obstacles: pass on the inside when the road bends toward you and the outside when it bends away.

TIP 4

Use small steering inputs at top speed — the lean physics punish large corrections twice as hard while boosting.

TIP 5

After a crash, reset your rhythm deliberately; easing off for two corners is faster than another trip across the tarmac.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who made Super Hang-On, and when?

Sega released it to arcades in 1987 as the sequel to Hang-On, on the company’s 16-bit arcade hardware, with the famous ride-on motorcycle cabinet for steering by leaning.

Is it free to play?

Yes — the page is free with no account and nothing to install. The game plays through the Internet Archive’s official arcade emulator right here.

Why does the game take a while to load first time?

It is streaming an entire arcade board from archive.org and booting it — ten to forty seconds on the first go. Your browser then caches the files and later loads are faster.

Can I play it on a phone?

Racing needs continuous throttle and steering, which the embedded keyboard-first player handles best. Touch devices should open the Internet Archive link from this page.
